Author’s Bio

Over the course of fifteen years, Walter Adams has composed a body of work tracing a deeply personal pilgrimage—from collapse and suffering to enchantment, resacralization, and mystical renewal. His writings reflect a continual unfolding of insight, guided throughout by the enduring presence of St. Thérèse of Lisieux and St. Joan of Arc.

His first book, Journey to Christendom, marked the beginning—a raw and heartfelt testimonial of conversion, revealing the powerful influence of these two saints on a life once fractured, now seeking divine orientation.

In The Dove and Rose, that orientation became devotion. A poetic and descriptive work, it revealed the author’s growing interior life as it took root in spiritual friendship and the sacred geography of Mystical France.

With Royaume France, the journey deepened into metaphysical terrain. This book explored the sacred structure of reality through the lens of Catholic monarchy and the Marian heart of civilization.

The Dove and Rose II introduced phenomenology, as the author sought not just to express devotion but to encounter the lived essence of it—to contemplate the appearance of Being through the persons of Thérèse and Joan.

Finally, in The House of New Bethany, Adams approached the threshold of mystical revelation. Here, the work began to shimmer with the themes of The Sky-Veil—the liminal space between worlds, where memory, Being, and divine light meet.

Together, these works are not separate volumes but chapters in a singular spiritual and poetic journey—a mythopoeic unfolding rooted in the heart of the Church and reaching toward the eternal.

The First Step Toward Enchantment

It began on a blustery October afternoon in 2008, driving northward on the Eden’s Expressway after adoring the Blessed Sacrament at the Church of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Chicago. The roads were open, and so was my heart. As traffic thinned, my thoughts wandered—at first subtly, then into something like a dream. Phrases came to me, drifting through like a gentle mist:

One day
I was walking
Through a forest...

And then:

In an open field I saw an
Unusual scene
There, a group of bright,
Smiling people were,
Dancing...

Earlier, in the quiet of Eucharistic adoration, I had seen myself in a meadow beside the Blessed Virgin Mary. She spoke gently:
“If you have something you feel you need to say, you should probably think about saying it.”
I paused, then responded:
“Yes, I believe I do have something I would like to say now.”

Thus began the journey—a movement from collapse to calling, from disorientation to pilgrimage. Journey to Christendom is the first step in a fifteen-year path that would unfold through devotion, metaphysics, phenomenology, and eventually, into the mystical shimmer of the Sky-Veil. It is a testimonial of conversion, but more than that, it is a beginning: the moment the silence broke, and the dance began.

This fourth edition of The Dove and Rose brings clarity and renewed focus to its original intent: to inspire devotion to St. Joan of Arc, the Dove, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Rose.

Rooted in personal experience, The Dove and Rose is not a biography but a series of deeply descriptive reflections—an intimate account of how these two saints reshaped the author’s interior life. A lifelong devotee of Thérèse, I encountered Joan through the poetry and plays of the Little Flower. From that moment, something extraordinary stirred: Joan of Arc stepped forward as the guiding presence of my life—second only to Jesus and Mary.

What followed was not merely a spiritual devotion, but a journey out of the Dark Forest of modern confusion and into a radiant clarity I came to call The Trail of the Dogmatic Creed. It was Joan who led me, and Thérèse who accompanied me. Together, they became my sisters, my guardians, and my celestial companions.

This book is an invitation, not an instruction. You will not find the historical story of the saints here. Instead, you will find a reflective pilgrimage—a gentle offering of devotion for those who feel drawn to walk beside Joan and Thérèse, and to begin writing their own story along the trail.

Your journey has not yet been told. But it begins here—on the path of the Dove and the Rose.

The Encounter of Hearts and the Return to Meaning

At the heart of Royaume France lies a singular phenomenon—an encounter so quietly seismic that it reshaped the entire structure of my life. It was as if everything before a particular October day in 2008 had prepared the ground, and everything after became a pilgrimage to understand what had taken place.

In that moment, through the poetic and theatrical imagination of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Joan of Arc entered my life—not as a figure from history but as a living presence. It was, in the words of St. Edith Stein, a divine glance: a sudden and unexplainable interior event that united the hearts of Joan and Thérèse in a single act of supernatural intimacy. This book is an extended reflection on the meaning of that glance.

Royaume France is not a biography of the saints, but an account of their effect on a life. It charts a movement through religion, philosophy, and phenomenology, and then back again—each step an effort to comprehend the grace given through that luminous encounter. Despite its philosophical tone, this work remains profoundly devotional. The language may rise into metaphysics, but the origin of this journey is mystical and Marian: a gift from Christ through the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

This book marks a turning point in my written corpus—from devotional witness to ontological reflection, from description to interpretation. It is the record of a transformation, not yet complete, but enduring.

The Dove and Rose II

This book can never be finished. That is why I am publishing it as the first edition. The text will no doubt continue to develop, and I will release future substantive increments as new editions to the same title.

The Dove and Rose II is purposely named to reflect an association with The Dove and Rose published over a decade past. The original was a devotional collection of reflections on the combined hearts of St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. It has developed phenomenologically over the years into a much more mature expression that I call The Dove and Rose II. This book is an outline of my journey into the heart of St. Joan of Arc through the hermeneutics of St. Thérèse. Its phenomenology is influenced by the philosophical insights of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, also known as St. Edith Stein.

The reader looking for the stories of St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse will not find them. This book reveals my own spiritual journey with these two saintly sisters. The interpretations, conclusions, and assertions are my own. However, what the reader might uncover with some imagination and contemplative reflection is the appearance of a story appearing out of the mist of one’s own spiritual life which has universal meaning. There is no prescriptive formula in this book, only a series of points of light along a pathway through the dark night of faith. It is a journey with St. Joan and St. Thérèse to the mystical Kingdom of Catholic and Royal France in the center of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These points of light beckon the reader to develop their own meaningful expression of friendship with St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse. That story - your story - remains to be written.

The Threshold of the Kingdom, at the Feet of the Lord

Though brief in form, The House of New Bethany gathers the fruit of over fifteen years of contemplation, writing, Eucharistic adoration, and interior pilgrimage. Every sentence is the result of long silence; every reflection a doorway to something far deeper.

This book distills the essence of my entire spiritual and philosophical journey. What appears here as a gentle devotion to St. Mary Magdalene conceals a shimmering Kingdom—one formed in the light of the united hearts of St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, circumscribed within the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

This is the Kingdom of Mystical France—a hidden form that emerges in the sacred geography stretching from Bethany to the shores of Provence. Mary Magdalene, as the embodiment of this Kingdom, becomes a mystical guide whose holy companionship leads us to the feet of Christ: at Bethany, beneath the Cross, at the tomb of the Resurrection, and finally, into the sacred heartlands of Catholic and Royal France.

The House of New Bethany is not a book to be read quickly. Though its pages are few, its mystery may unfold across a lifetime. It is an offering of Catholic devotion, an invitation to walk the interior trail toward the Kingdom, and to dwell forever in the Mystical France of Our Lord’s love.

Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, stands on the brink of history. At just seventeen-years-old, this extraordinary young woman commands the French Army, the youngest ever to hold such power.1 With her devoted troops, she prepares to assault the English stronghold in Jargeau, determined to reclaim France from English occupation. Her ultimate goal? To pave the way for Charles VII’s crowning in Reims as the legitimate King of France, all in obedience to the divine voices she hears from heaven. These voices, including that of St. Michael the Archangel, who cast Satan from heaven by God’s power, have guided her since childhood.

Captain La Hire, loyal and fierce, addresses a group of hesitant captains in Joan’s army. These men, fearing direct confrontation with the formidable English forces, prefer a prolonged siege. Let’s listen in as La Hire passionately sets the record straight about Joan’s mission and the new era of warfare she embodies. Picture him throwing his helmet against the wall, his voice rising as he speaks. As you do, consider the Church in today’s world and the strongholds of evil we face. Reflect on the battle before us to free souls from tyranny and pray for a modern-day Joan of Arc. Now, hear La Hire’s words:

“There are some that never know how to change. Circumstances may change, but those people are never able to see that they have got to change too, to meet those circumstances. All that they know is the one beaten track that their fathers and grandfathers have followed and that they themselves have followed in their turn. If an earthquake come and rip the land to chaos, and that beaten track now lead over precipices and into morasses, those people can’t learn that they must strike out a new road – no; they will march stupidly along and follow the old one to death and perdition. Men, there’s a new state of things; and a surpassing military genius has perceived it with her clear eye. And a new road is required, and that same clear eye has noted where it must go, and has marked it out for us. The man does not live, never has lived, never will live, that can improve upon it! The old state of things was defeat, defeat, defeat – and by consequence we had troops with no dash, no heart, no hope. Would you assault stone walls with such? No – there was but one way, with that kind; sit down before a place and wait, wait – starve it out if you could. The new case is the very opposite; it is this: men all on fire with pluck and dash and vim and fury and energy – a restrained conflagration! What would you do with it? Hold it down and let it smoulder and perish and go out? What would Joan of Arc do with it? Turn it loose, by the Lord God of heaven and earth, and let it swallow up the foe in the whirlwind of its fires! Nothing shows the wisdom and splendor of her military genius like her instant comprehension of the size of the change which has come about, and her instant perception of the right and only right way to take advantage of it. With her is no sitting down or starving out; no dilly-dallying and fooling around; no lazying and loafing, and going to sleep; no, it is storm! storm! storm! And still storm! storm! storm! And forever storm! storm! storm! hunt the enemy to his hole, then turn her French hurricanes loose and carry him by storm! And that is my sort! Jargeau? What of Jargeau, with its battlements and towers, its devastating artillery, and its seven thousand picked veterans? Joan of Arc is to the fore, and by the splendor of God its fate is sealed!”2

With divine inspiration and leadership, Joan of Arc led her troops to storm Jargeau, putting the enemy to flight. In what may be one of the most successful and charitable military campaigns in history, Joan achieved remarkable victories in just seven weeks with minimal bloodshed. Her leadership ended the English siege of Orleans, secured the Loire Valley, and led to a miraculously bloodless march to Reims for the king’s coronation. Stronghold after stronghold fell without a fight, purely on the reputation of this holy warrior, a mere seventeen-year-old country girl.

Though betrayed and martyred, Joan’s efforts eventually freed France and established Charles VII as king. Her heroism and divine calling transformed him into a more courageous leader, a testament to the grace and wisdom of Our Lord. Crucially, this divine guidance and Joan’s unwavering faith ended the Hundred Years War. Jesus Christ, through Joan of Arc’s selfless cooperation, brought peace to a war-torn continent.

Is there anything more worth fighting for than what Joan of Arc fought for? Would the French have been better off surrendering their beliefs for a false sense of unity with their oppressors? They were right to fight, to believe deeply and defend their kingdom.

Today, like 15^th century France, we find the Christian religion and culture under siege, particularly the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Some suggest Catholics should keep their beliefs private while modern atheism and ancient Eastern spiritualities encroach upon our Western, formerly Christian civilization. Should we, inheritors of the Church that gave birth to France, the Eldest Daughter of the Church, and built Western civilization, remain silent? Or should we, inspired by Joan of Arc’s spirit, storm the gates of hell to reclaim our land?

Let us remember this as we witness the siege on our Holy Mother Church, the Roman Catholic Church, founded by the Lord Himself. May we fight the good fight, raise the siege of darkness, and revel in the freedom of our Catholic faith and culture!

My writings began in 2008 as devotional reflections, transforming a few years later into a second phase of phenomenology. This was in an attempt to understand more deeply and reverently the gift of St. Joan of Arc given to me by St. Thérèse. The phenomenology was one of consciousness as inspired by St. Edith Stein and her mentor Edmund Husserl. Helpful as that was, I moved seven years later to a third phase, the phenomenology of Being of Martin Heidegger. The post below reflects my writing from the second phase, the phenomenology of consciousness. The Phenomenon of St. Joan of Arc

The greatest gift we can receive from God is a single encounter the meaning of which we must spend our entire life discovering. This discovery is the pearl of great price for which one sells all one owns to acquire. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”1

The Dove and Rose began with an attempt to make sense of a single encounter. It is as if the trajectory of my entire life beforehand prepared me to receive it, and the purpose every day after has been to interpret its meaning. It began the search for my “pearl of great value.” The encounter was a phenomenon, a powerful moment of intuitive comprehension whereby St. Joan of Arc permanently entered my life story through the Jehannian hermeneutics of St. Thérèse’s plays and poetry. I refer to it, using Thérèsian terminology, as a “divine glance”2 and an encounter with the combined hearts of St. Joan (The Dove) and St. Thérèse (The Rose). This phenomenon led to a tireless search for its meaning. This search transformed my life as I sold all that I had to obtain the pearl.

The Dove and Rose is an attempt to explain the meaning of this encounter and the process of transformation that transpired in searching for it. It is not about St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux directly. It is about my life story with them and their influence on me. The Dove and Rose is a record of this intellectual and spiritual journey in union with their combined hearts.

Despite some of the philosophical language, the work remains highly devotional in nature. There are metaphysics and phenomenology but no attempt to make this “divine glance” a purely philosophical affair. The astonishing3 moment imbuing my soul with a lifelong devotion to St. Joan of Arc is supernatural in nature and a grace from Our Lord Jesus Christ through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I have done my best here to explain its meaning which I hope will be an inspiration for a similarly powerful devotion to St. Joan and St. Thérèse in others.

What is The Dove and Rose?

The Dove and Rose is a phenomenology of the combined hearts of St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux as given through their royal French Catholic spirituality. St. Joan is the “point of inquiry” on a journey through her noetic field of meaning to “mystical France” in the the center of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The “Jehannian hermeneutic” - our primary method of interpreting Joan’s life - is the heart of St. Thérèse as revealed through her poetry and plays.

The Dove and Rose is not the story of these saints but the spiritual phenomenology of their influence in my own life-experience. It is a Catholic phenomenological reflection centered on the life of St. Joan of Arc, the savior and heroine of France, which projects an empathic understanding of her mystical map of meaning. St. Thérèse, through her plays and poetry, is the authentic interpreter of St. Joan’s life. The Dove and Rose is a testimony and an invitation to walk phenomenologically with St. Joan and St. Thérèse into the mystical Kingdom of Catholic and Royal France.4 This is all in obedience to the Church’s Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterial teachings and total consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Dove and Rose is an anthological collection of reflections revealing the “appearance of the Kingdom appearing” as related through an eclectic array of devotional expressions. The expressions that emerge in the heart and mind of the reader remain to be written.

Vision and Mission of The Dove and Rose

Vision

The Vision of The Dove and Rose is the combined hearts of St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux as a phenomenological prism through which the Holy Spirit reflects the metaphysics and spirituality of Our Lady’s Catholic and Royal France.

Mission

The Mission of The Dove and Rose is to project St. Joan and St. Thérèse’s intersubjective noetic map of meaning through every corner of our heart. This immanent meaning becomes our stairway to the transcendence of Mystical France in Heaven.5

Method

The method of The Dove and Rose is phenomenology guided by Catholic metaphysics. It is to “contemplate how we think” to better “see what we have already seen”6 through a single-minded phenomenological devotion to St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux within the context of the metaphysics of the Catholic Church, its sacred tradition, and magisterial teachings. Phenomenological devotion in this context means to receive, record, interpret, assert, and articulate what these saints give us faithfully and prayerfully. This method of discourse is our “journey” with the saints.

Goal

The goal of The Dove and Rose is “descriptive fidelity” to what is given to us through this devotion “precisely as it is given, and within the limits of how it is given.”7

Outcome

The outcome we seek through the Dove and Rose is a mystical friendship with St. Joan and St. Thérèse and a sharing in their abiding union with Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

At the heart of Royaume France lies a singular phenomenon—an encounter so quietly seismic that it reshaped the entire structure of my life. It was as if everything before a particular October day in 2008 had prepared the ground, and everything after became a pilgrimage to understand what had taken place.

In that moment, through the poetic and theatrical imagination of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Joan of Arc entered my life—not as a figure from history but as a living presence. It was, in the words of St. Edith Stein, a divine glance: a sudden and unexplainable interior event that united the hearts of Joan and Thérèse in a single act of supernatural intimacy. This book is an extended reflection on the meaning of that glance.

Royaume France is not a biography of the saints, but an account of their effect on a life. It charts a movement through religion, philosophy, and phenomenology, and then back again—each step an effort to comprehend the grace given through that luminous encounter. Despite its philosophical tone, this work remains profoundly devotional. The Dove and Rose II

This book can never be finished. That is why I am publishing it as the first edition. The text will no doubt continue to develop, and I will release future substantive increments as new editions to the same title.

The Dove and Rose II is purposely named to reflect an association with The Dove and Rose published over a decade past. The original was a devotional collection of reflections on the combined hearts of St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. It has developed phenomenologically over the years into a much more mature expression that I call The Dove and Rose II. This book is an outline of my journey into the heart of St. Joan of Arc through the hermeneutics of St. Thérèse. Its phenomenology is influenced by the philosophical insights of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, also known as St. Edith Stein.

The reader looking for the stories of St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse will not find them. This book reveals my own spiritual journey with these two saintly sisters. The interpretations, conclusions, and assertions are my own. However, what the reader might uncover with some imagination and contemplative reflection is the appearance of a story appearing out of the mist of one’s own spiritual life which has universal meaning. There is no prescriptive formula in this book, only a series of points of light along a pathway through the dark night of faith. It is a journey with St. Joan and St. Thérèse to the mystical Kingdom of Catholic and Royal France in the center of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These points of light beckon the reader to develop their own meaningful expression of friendship with St. Joan of Arc and St. Thérèse. That story - your story - remains to be written.

Mary Magdalene, as the embodiment of this Kingdom, becomes a mystical guide whose holy companionship leads us to the feet of Christ: at Bethany, beneath the Cross, at the tomb of the Resurrection, and finally, into the sacred heartlands of Catholic and Royal France.
